St Ignatius’ wound in Pamplona and orthopaedic surgery

In this section we publish the article “The origins of limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery date back to 1521 when the first surgery ever reported in history was performed on St. Ignatius of Loyola” published in the journal International Orthopaedics on 25 June by Filippo Vandenbulcke, Beth Lineham, Emiliano Malagoli and Alexander Kirienko.

The article discusses the historical case of St Ignatius of Loyola’s leg injury and subsequent surgery as a potential early example of limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery.
